Geïnspireerd door het smeltend ijs in Lapland creeerde Tapio Wirkkala ( 1915-1985 ) het oorspronkelijke oppervlak voor Ultima Thule door het in een mal te graveren.
Ultima Thule is vanaf de introductie in 1968 een succes dankzij de meer dan opvallende vormgeving, die ruim 50 jaar later nog steeds uiterst actueel is.
